here Dr Nils Lindahl Elliot is a lecturer, researcher and consultant with expertise in the area of environmental studies. His teaching and research focuses on public understandings of nature – especially those involving the media of mass communication.
Nils is the author of Mediating Nature (Routledge 2006) and of essays in journals that explore the social semeiotics of public understandings of nature. The extra ‘e’ in semeiotics signals an interdisciplinary approach that combines anthropological and sociological perspectives with the theory of signs proposed by Charles Sanders Peirce.
His research has attracted support from the British Academy, the AHRB (now AHRC), the ESRC, and most recently the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI). Aspects of Nils' work have been represented in UK national media such as the BBC Radio4's Thinking Allowed, BBC Four's Cinema Show, and the Times Higher Education Supplement.
The results of visitor research for his latest project, ‘Observing Wildlife on Barro Colorado Island’, were presented to the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute in Panama in 2011. Nils is currently completing a book about the overall research project, and is the editor of the cmcee.net website and blog. The website will become an interdisciplinary distance education centre beginning May 2013.
